First Steps: The Effort to Transport Water from Wood to Lead

In ancient times, the best-known way to transport water was through channels made of clay and stone. Although the Romans revolutionized aqueducts by using lead pipes, these materials were fragile and could never withstand high pressure. By the 1700s, European cities were using hollow logs (wooden pipes) for their water networks. However, as cities grew and, especially, coal gas became necessary for lighting, wood and lead proved insufficient. Humanity needed a water supply system resistant to "fire and pressure."

The Interesting Birth of Welded Pipes: From Rifle Barrels to Gas Lines

The invention of black welded pipes (welded steel pipes) is based on one of the most interesting coincidences in industrial history. In 1815, an inventor named William Murdock, while installing a coal gas lighting system in London, couldn't find a suitable pipe to carry the gas. As a solution, he welded together old rifle barrels left over from wars, creating the world's first metal pipeline!

This ingenuity ignited the steel pipe industry. By 1824, James Russell had patented the first "seamless pipe" production, which involved bending flat iron sheets, heating the ends, and forging them together.
